How to Deal with Social Anxiety Symptoms in 3 Ways

by Panic Attacks Center on November 22, 2010

Social anxiety is one of the most well known anxiety disorders since most people deal with this everyday. Social anxiety symptoms such as blushing in front of someone without any reason at all, having difficulty with your bladder in a public restroom or shaking uncontrollably when you’re introducing a presentation at work can be a nuisance and can ruin your self esteem big time.

There are a lot of social anxiety symptoms that many have experienced but the important thing is to know how to deal with it when one suddenly faces them. Here’s how:

1. Quit with the negative thinking

Not only should this be applied in dealing with social anxiety symptoms but one should really apply this in their daily life. Negative thinking causes a lot of anxieties and can really lead to a serious panic attack. Even a simple “People might think I’m boring” before you even start your presentation can lead you to being all jittery, shaky and will make you experience all other social anxiety symptoms in one go. That won’t help you at all.

What you need is to become rational and keep a focused mind. Ask yourself questions that will counter attack all those negative thinking such as, “Nobody knows my presentation better than I do so I know I won’t be boring”. Things like these can eliminate all sorts of social anxiety symptoms.

2. Stop trying to read people’s minds.

You are not a mind reader so stop trying to analyze what people are thinking. One of the most common social anxiety symptoms is how people usually define or guess what people are thinking about them. They worry about how others perceive him or her and they freak out for all the wrong reasons. This is not a very good way to deal with social anxiety symptoms.

If you find yourself doing this all the time then you need to stop, look and listen. Try to analyze your surroundings. Listen to what’s going on. Do you really think they’re talking about you right now? Do you really think that everything in this room is about you? If you are speaking in front of a lot of people and these symptoms such as this suddenly pops into your mind, then do what is mentioned above: think positively. Counter attack the thought. And most importantly, let your mind be preoccupied with other stuff rather than guess what they’re thinking.

3. Volunteer

In order to work off all those social anxiety symptoms that come your way, you must be socially active. Volunteer in some small projects that your office might have if you are having difficulty in a large crowd. Volunteer to an event that your community or neighborhood is having. It helps when you ease yourself slowly into these situations because you talk to just a handful of people. This will build up your self-confidence and can greatly eliminate the usual symptoms that you feel.

Keeping these 3 things in mind can do wonders for you. You will be able to get your confidence back, be a more reasonable person and can gain more friends. Deal with these social anxiety symptoms by using these 3 tips and you will have a better social life.
